Helpful Hints - Peninsular Configurator

Model IHP - Metric High Pressure Hydraulic Cylinders

"Selecting the Correct Piston Rod Thread Size"

The National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) has assigned five separate rod threads for each piston rod diameter to be used as a standard for high pressure hydraulic cylinders; there are no standard NFPA dimensions for spooled rod ends. The purpose of assigning standard threads for each rod diameter is to create cylinder interchangeability from one cylinder manufacturer to another.

Note that Peninsular will manufacture other piston rod threads to meet your specific requirements, however, this will produce a cylinder that is not interchangeable to other NFPA manufactured cylinders. To configure a non standard cylinder please contact us at (800) 526-7968 in the USA or Canada or at (586) 775-7211. You may also e-mail us at  sales@peninsularcylinders.com.

Example of Male Piston Rod Threads

Example:     3/4" - 16 x 1.12"   (see illustration Below)

3/4"    =   Diameter of the Threaded End of the Piston Rod

16      =   the Number of Threads Per Inch

1.12"   =   the Overall Length of the Piston Rod Threads

Example:     3/4" - 16 x 1.12"   (see illustration Below)

3/4"    =    Inside Diameter of the Threaded Hole

16      =    the Number of Threads Per Inch

1.12"   =    the Minimum Depth of the Internal Piston Rod Threads

Threaded Male Stud Piston Rod End

Example of a Threaded Male Stud Piston Rod End:

By selecting a Threaded Male Rod Stud Piston Rod End in our configurator you will automatically receive a threaded stud that contains a NFPA  short male thread on the piston rod of the cylinder that you have configured.  Once configured, the part number for your cylinder will have a  /R at the end of the cylinder ordering number which designates this threaded male rod end stud feature and a "F" will appear after the rod diameter within the cylinder part number.

Our Threaded Male Rod Stud Piston Rod End can only be ordered through this configurator with a NFPA “Short Male” thread.

The only way to order another male piston rod end thread pitch (with a threaded rod end stud) other than the NFPA short male thread through our configurator is to contact Peninsular at (800) 526-7968 in the USA or Canada or at (586) 775-7211. All Peninsular Rod End Studs are made from 100,000 PSI yield high strength steel. Please call us if your application requires a higher yield strength material.

There are pros and cons associated with the use of  piston rod end-threaded male studs. Piston rod end studs are sometimes preferred because in the event of a rod thread breakage, the stud can be easily removed and replaced without replacing the entire piston rod assembly.  Should you require any additional information on this subject please contact us at (800) 526-7968 in the USA or Canada or at (586) 775-7211.
