"Selecting the Correct Piston Rod Diameter"

Different Piston Rod Diameters are approved for various Bore Sizes by the the ISO (International Standards Organizations) VDMA 24-562 and ISO 6431 cylinder specifications for Peninsular's model IMH metric steel air cylinders and model ILM metric aluminum air Cylinders.

These Piston Rod Diameters, standardized by the VDMA 24-562 and ISO 6431 cylinder specifications, are one contributing factor that allows cylinder interchangeability to occur between cylinder manufacturers who produce their cylinders to Metric guidelines. The dimensions for Piston Rod Threads are also determined by the VDMA 24-562 and ISO 6431 cylinder specifications and are selected for each approved Piston Rod Diameter.

The Peninsular Piston Rod Diameter and Rod Thread Chart below illustrates the cylinder bore, rod diameter and rod threads set forth by the VDMA 24-562 and ISO 6431 cylinder specifications which are incorporated into all Peninsular model IMH metric steel air cylinders and model ILM metric aluminum air cylinders.  Know that larger diameter piston rods reduce the cylinder force on the retracted (pull) stroke of the cylinder more than smaller rod diameters. This is because there is less surface area of the piston available.

Should additional Rod Diameters or Threads become necessary Peninsular will manufacture these sizes as well; however, adding additional Rod Diameters or Threads other than those charted herein, could prevent Metric cylinder interchangeability from occurring to other cylinder manufacturers.
