Scraper rings are a popular optional feature often found on both air and hydraulic cylinders that reduce the amount of external contamination that can enter the body of the cylinder, on the retracted stroke of the piston rod. This cylinder feature is often used in those applications where outside contamination is present around the cylinder. This contamination can land on the piston rod and, thus, can be dragged back inside the cylinder through the rod cartridge on the retraction of the cylinder stroke.

Scraper rings can be made from various materials such as steel, bronze or other metals. Many cylinder manufacturers choose to let the scraper ring replace the rod wiper seal in the front end of the rod cartridge. The Peninsular design permits the continued use of the rod wiper which is located behind the scraper ring (see illustration below). This improved design ensures a better sealing and rod wiping condition in the rod cartridge when employed in those applications where external contamination is ever present.

When the scraper ring optional feature is selected you will see the /S in the cylinder part number after the configured cylinder is generated

Another effective means of protecting the piston rod from external contamination is to employ the use of a rod boot cover, however, this feature is more expensive than the scraper ring. Please refer to our Rod Boot Cover ( /H ) helpful hints for more details on this particular feature.

When the Scraper Ring feature is selected a / S will appear near the end of the cylinder ordering number after the cylinder is generated for configuration.
