Peninsular & EJ
EJ (formerly East Jordan Iron Works), was on a quest for an external repair shop. Then, they found Peninsular, and the rest is history. Read EJ’s words below about how Peninsular has accommodated their repair needs.
“When EJ decided to look for an external cylinder repair shop, we had a few items that the new shop would need to be capable of doing for us.
We did not want to rebuild cylinders at EJ anymore and needed a shop with a good turnaround time since the cylinders would now be off site for repair. Fair shipping cost and the ability to apply a new paint color code we were implementing were also important.
The shop needed to have the ability to work with us and make special changes to meet our needs.
Quality of the parts used and the consistency rebuilding our cylinders with improvements were also key. We needed to be able to work together for the best reliability. We also needed the least amount of downtime caused by cylinder failure.
We needed a relationship with the cylinder repair shop open and clear to express our needs and hear their ideas and solutions to our problems. Together we would need to make major gains in cylinder reliability and performance. The shop would need to work with EJ on special projects and engineering solutions.
We found Peninsular Cylinder and have formed a great relationship with this company. They are willing to help with anything we can dream up as well as general cylinder repair. The people we work with are friendly, helpful, and on call 24/7 for our needs.”
Peninsular & DuBose-Cost, Service, & Adaptability
Dubose Strapping is a manufacturer of steel and plastic strapping, house wrap, and steel wrap. Our company was started in 1990 and only produced steel strapping at that time. Our facilities are located in Clinton, NC and Crawfordsville, IN. Our primary customers are the lumber industry, and steel industry.
Our first experience with Peninsular was looking for more cost effective cylinders to replace other existing brands without sacrificing quality. Our major power transmission supplier suggested we try Peninsular and explained the benefits and quality put into the product. After successfully converting several existing cylinder brands to Peninsular, we used Peninsular to design cylinders for special applications where a standard cylinder would not work. For every application that we have used a Peninsular cylinder, we have been happy with the cost, service life, and ability of Peninsular to adapt to our needs.
Going forward, as our business continues to grow, I see Peninsular Cylinder continuing to be used in our plants and helping to provide solutions for special applications as they arise. Their willingness to come in and work with us when needed, provide cost effective products, and provide a product that can hold up to the demanding applications we have, will certainly keep our partnership ongoing.
FTI Machine Worx, Many Cycles Later
Prepared by: Tony Iannucci
Introduction
FTI Machine Worx has been in business since 2005, creating highly specialized test machinery for the automotive and off-highway industries. We handle all facets of the machinery we provide, from the mechanicals to the HMI and control system(s).
We were approached by a customer that required their part to be pressurized up to 52 MPa at a frequency of 10Hz. This requirement made us re-think a traditional servo based hydraulic solution based on the elevated amplitude of the requirement. Our solution was to use a hydraulic booster/amplifier that could handle the hydraulic volume required to test simultaneous parts.
The search was then on to find someone that manufactured such a device. Several manufacturers existed, but they all provided units that amplified a rather small volume. We needed a device to amplify a higher volume of fluid. That led us to research if a “custom” solution could be manufactured.
We approached several hydraulic cylinder manufacturers who were all interested in taking on the project initially. After several rounds of hashing out the details of our requirements, they started to become skeptical that such a booster/amplifier could be manufactured reliably. Peninsular Cylinder never showed that skepticism, but rather seemed excited to meet the challenges, and offered suggestions and design modifications to deal with the high travel rates and elevated temperatures we anticipated.
The implementation of the booster/amplifier was successful. FTI Machine Worx, and Peninsular Cylinder have learned a lot along the way to our successful implementation. The process took several attempts to produce a unit that would meet our durability requirements, but Peninsular Cylinder followed through by analyzing failure modes and using continuous improvements to provide a more robust booster/amplifier.
Since the original implementation of the booster/amplifier, we have manufactured several machines that use the amplifier/booster technology. Each implementation has provided us with more knowledge, and now we have the confidence that the booster/amplifier is as robust as the other components of the machinery we manufacture.
We will continue to utilize the technology we developed, and we forecast providing units up to 75MPa in the near future. We have every confidence that Peninsular Cylinder will help us achieve these strenuous requirements as we move forward. Their willingness and diligence to follow through has provided us a competitive advantage in our industry. That advantage is paramount to the success of FTI Machine Worx, and we look forward to partnering with Peninsular Cylinder in the future.
3 Day Turnaround for a Hot Request
“This will help out extremely for our accelerated timing!!
I know you may not hear it often enough but … Suppliers like yourself are the backbone of our industry!!! We don’t exist without the help and support of our great vendors … Peninsular ROCKS!!!”
One of the largest machine tool manufacturers in the state of Michigan contacted Peninsular with a crucial delivery request Tuesday afternoon. They wanted two cylinders built and delivered to northern Indiana within 8 days. The products pictured are two heavy duty steel air cylinders with 6” bores, both accompanied by trunnion mounting assemblies.
The Peninsular team adjusted resources and the cylinders were hand delivered just 2 days later beating the customers time request by 6 days. Clear communication, quality manufacturing, attention to detail, and a strong customer focus were all key factors in making this happen. Peninsular continues to implement these strategic processes daily to ensure the satisfaction of their clients both nationally and internationally.
World Class Customer Service
Just wanted to send your team an “atta boy” this morning.
We had an issue with one of our largest customers in that their purchasing department inadvertently sent an order for 26 cylinders to an invalid email address at our office. These cylinders were needed for a project on Saturday the 11th. The problem came to light when the customer contacted me on Thursday the 2nd asking where the cylinders were. I made what I figured to be a futile phone call to Dave Bucek explaining what had happened. Instead of just telling me there was no way to get them done, he said let me check.
After several phone calls, quote changes and emails he assured me that the cylinders would be ready to ship NDA on Thursday the 9th. Bryan Hoover became the “go to” guy for follow-up on the order. He stayed in touch with me with updates all the way up to providing tracking numbers late Thursday afternoon. As a result, the cylinders were delivered Friday around noon.
Customer was happy, project completed on Saturday. I know there were many others involved in this process that I don’t know their names so I trust you will give them our thanks. I realize this note is lengthy but due to the lack of good customer service in our industry and others I just wanted you to know how much we appreciate the efforts of your team. Just another reason we like doing business with Peninsular Cylinder.
