The Fluid Power Action Challenge is a STEM-based competition that challenges middle school students to solve an engineering problem using fluid power. The events are held at Macomb Community College and are divided into two parts: a workshop day, followed by the official challenge.
Workshop Day – March 6th, 2025
On workshop day students are introduced to fluid power. They are instructed on good design concepts and division of labor. Each team then builds a lifting and a rotating device.Challenge Day – May 1st, 2025
On challenge day teams will follow their own instructions and use a new kit of identical supplies to recreate their device. They will use this device to compete in a timed competition against their peers to test how well their device solved the engineering problem.
To start the challenge, we distribute kits to student groups of four, each kit containing materials such as wood, paper, glue, tubing, and syringes. Their mission? To engineer this year’s challenge machine, a task that demands a blend of creativity and practical application. The competition is a race against time, pushing students to master project planning, manage resources effectively, and navigate team dynamics. They’ll need to test, tweak, and explore their designs, mirroring the hands-on, real-world scenarios they might face in their future careers.
This event is all about supporting teachers and providing students with a hands-on learning experience. And let’s not forget the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and time management skills that the students gain throughout the event.
